MY INSPIRATION -- MARIAN'S STORY Three years ago Marian, my mother-in-law, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer & Acute Leukemia. Our lives changed forever when we heard those words. Our stress level jumped from 0 to 100. She was a YOUNG 75 year old; camping, hiking and hang gliding just the summer before! She was my role model and, truth be told, none of us could really ever keep up with her! The doctor told us her treatment plan and put her on 22 meds. We were all very confused by her drug regimen (and eventual drug changes). I went to the drug store to buy her a “med management system” and there wasn’t one. So, I invented one for her. My background includes 20+ years in teaching and designing training in an aerospace factory environment. I knew that what we needed was a “visual medication management” tool. Most people are visual learners, not auditory ones, yet most healthcare pros simply talk about drug regimens. This is not an effective way to teach such complex and important material. Another problem we had was that the doctor would prescribe one drug but the pharmacist might dispense a drug with a different generic name. It was extremely confusing. With the visual guide (IdentiMed) Marian could manage her multiple medicines easily. She was so savvy about her meds that up until a few months before she died she was still in charge and filling her own pillboxes! So, for as long as Marian could, she managed her meds on her own – it was one part of her life she could control and that was important to her. When we took over her med management IdentiMed helped us learn her drug regimen, take charge and participate in a meaningful way with her healthcare team about healthcare decisions. It also helped us communicate to the specialists involved, coordinate her care, teach respite caregivers and have some semblance of order during a very chaotic and sad time. I am so proud to take this tool forward in her honor. Currently, it is being used at Multnomah County HIV Clinic, OHSU HIV, OHSU Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, several Home Health Care organizations, BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon and SW Washington Medical Center. Please let me know how it helps your family or client. I have received many letters from families who are trying to cope and appreciate your comments. With IdentiMed, I hope to help make at least one task a whole lot easier. Mary Schutten |
